I installed Windows 7 home premium 64-bit on a new Asus motherboard with an Intel Z97 chipset. I have a couple of hard drives and a couple of RAID's connected by eSATA. I have other SATA HDD's too but none behave in the similar manner.

SATA is hot-swappable, isn't it? A USB transfer cable can be used for many of the same things, sometimes SSD's are bundled with one to migrate the OS onto it. If I rescan disks it comes back, but it will disappear again for what reason I can't determine. this is happening again, this time with a new (refurbished) drive.

Mind you, what "overheating" can vary from drive to drive, especially if it's already marginal. there isn't any error, obviously, but that drive won't be available again without either a reboot or an un/replug of the USB cable...That gives me a thought, though... During the transfer the slice kept unmounting the hard disk from my OS.
